New Year

Written by Dale

The Two Travelers and the Farmer

A traveler came upon an old farmer hoeing in his field beside the road. Eager to rest his feet, the wanderer hailed the countryman, who seemed happy enough to straighten his back and talk for a moment.

"What sort of people live in the next town?" asked the stranger.

"What were the people like where you've come from?" replied the farmer, answering the question with another question.

"They were a bad lot. Troublemakers all, and lazy too. The most selfish people in the world, and not a one of them to be trusted. I'm happy to be leaving the scoundrels."

"Is that so?" replied the old farmer. "Well, I'm afraid that you'll find the same sort in the next town.

Disappointed, the traveler trudged on his way, and the farmer returned to his work.

Some time later another stranger, coming from the same direction, hailed the farmer, and they stopped to talk. "What sort of people live in the next town?" he asked.

"What were the people like where you've come from?" replied the farmer once again.

"They were the best people in the world. Hard working, honest, and friendly. I'm sorry to be leaving them."

"Fear not," said the farmer. "You'll find the same sort in the next town."

I recently read this story in a biography and it struck me as very timely given the New Year.  I think for many the choices to how 2012 turns out are based less on what the year has in store as much as their attitude going into it.    Are you going to believe the media that the wheels are coming off everything and we are spiraling out of control?  Or are we going to remember that Jesus is in control?

In the past I have found myself succumbing to a victim mentality that everything was against me.  This led to negativity, skepticism and ultimately depression.   I walked around under a dark cloud for weeks and sometimes months.  During those times I thought I had to justify my every action to gain others validation.  I wanted to find people to agree with me on how bad my situation was.  Anyone that threatened that was dismissed as not fully understanding of my struggle.  If they knew everything that was going on in my life then surely they would agree that the deck was stacked against me.

Thankfully a few years back God began a rescue mission in that area of my life.  I am by no means completely free of this thinking but thankfully it is in the minority thanks to the gospel.   When I started applying the practical realities of the gospel in my life I realized I had been living a lie.  His word says He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world.  This truth made me realize that no matter how bad things get here on this earth.  No matter how many people I fail or that take advantage of me I have something that overcomes them both.  No matter how much I lose in this life I have something worth far more.  I have Jesus and he is enough.  I forget this from time to time.  I start to think it’s up to me to make things work and I stress myself out.  God watches and waits and then gently reminds me that Jesus is enough.  Slowly but surely over the past couple of years I have learned this.

You need to decide now in the first week of the year how you are going to react.  Are you going to react based on God’s word and the principles laid out in the gospel?  Or are you going to try to do it yourself based on a lie?  One way ends with peace the other ends in depression.  The people you meet, the economy, election results, your church, your job, your finances won’t change.  What changes is you.  That is what God wants most in 2012.  He wants your heart to change not your circumstances.  He wants you to be less like your self- sufficient, sinful self and more like the image of His Son.

How you can help the Tompkins family.

Written by Dale

If you are reading this let me first thank you for caring enough about my family to see if you could help.  I am constantly humbled by the people God has used in my life.  Those that are willing to partner with my family will receive a report both for the overall finances of the trip as well as the gospel moments God allows our family to share.  If you are able to help my family financially here are the details of both trips.

The first trip will be taken Nov. 9-14th of this year.  The second trip will be in September of 2012. Because of the overall cost of this trip I am starting now to try to raise the support.  One way in which people have helped in the past is by donating enough sky miles to purchase an airline ticket.  This is by far the single greatest expense for the trip to Africa.  Because this amount is so much larger than any past trips, I want to be transparent about where exactly the money will be going.  Anyone that makes a donation can at any point request a breakdown of exactly where the money raised was used.  Below is the breakdown for the costs for the two trips:

Guatemala:

$1,628 Airfare  ($407 per person x 4) (Thankfully this need has already been met)

$1,600 for lodging and transportation ($400 per person x 4)

The final $1,600 will need to be raised by Nov. 4th

Africa:

$ 5,200 for airfare ($1,300 per person x 4)

$ 2,800 for hotels and transportation ($700 per person x 4)

$ 900 Books and resources for Pastors and their wives.

$ 486 Immunizations for Grace and Emma

On the right side of this page there is a link to donate through paypal electronically.  If you would rather give by check please make it out to COTW and in the memo line put “family gospel”.  This will ensure the donation is credited to the right account and mail it to the church P.O. Box:

Church on The Way

P.O. Box 1649

Lake City, Fl. 32056

I would love to answer any questions about the purpose of these missionary trips outside the immediate impact it will have on my family.  I am excited about the work going on in both Guatemala and Africa and would love to share more about them with you.  Again just by clicking on this page it shows that you care for my family.  If you are not currently in a place to help my family financially please do not forget to use your most powerful gift of prayer.  Please email me if you would like to hear about these trips and the affect they have on my family and I will add you to a mailing list of people that are supporting this endeavor.

Gospel Training for my Family

Written by Dale

Tompkins Family

Friends,

Over the past few years God has truly done some amazing things in my life!  Before going into the ministry I had rarely traveled out of the state of Florida.  God has literally opened up the world to me a small town boy from Lake City, Florida.  Since giving my life to ministry God has sent me to Guatemala, Kenya, and Israel.  God was gracious to me last year and enabled my wife to join me in traveling to Kenya to minister to pastors in the Nakuru area.  This was truly a gift because my wife got to see why making these mission trips are so important.  She got to experience firsthand the love of the pastors and their wives they expressed to us for coming.

Over the past few years I have been praying that God would allow me to have a year in which my entire family could go both to Guatemala and Kenya with me.  I know it is hard on my two little girls to give up their daddy for two to three weeks at a time.  My prayer has been that they would get to see and meet the people I am serving and see their need first hand.  It’s hard to teach a child about the concept of hunger in America where we are surrounded by food.  I want my girls to see what real need looks like.  I want them to grow up with a gospel perspective about every aspect of life including the food they eat.

While this has been my prayer, at times the financial reality of what this would cost has overwhelmed me to the point of not even asking people for help because the amounts seemed insurmountable.   God patiently and lovingly has grown my faith in him and what He can do on my behalf to get me to today.  Because God knew my heart, He began to work without me.  Through some very gracious people in my life, some of whom I have known a long time and others I have only recently met, he has provided enough to cover the airfare for my family to go to Guatemala this November.  This truly overwhelmed me last week and I am still in awe of how he works.  Keep in mind I had not asked directly anyone to help and yet He works it out so that $1,628 worth of plane tickets can be purchased.

But God also knows something else about my heart.  He knows that I still wrestle with pride when it comes to asking for help for anything for me or my family.

So why this year?  Two reasons the first is the way in which God has provided for the airfare to Guatemala.  The Second is the purpose of the Africa trip this year.  Our friends the Thomas’s are going to be moving their family to Nakuru to begin a life of missionary service.  The trip this year will include us going and helping them move in to their new home and ministry as well as allowing me to travel to Uganda to teach in the Ugandan Baptist Seminary.  Because of teaching in the seminary it is likely that I will be gone for a little over a month and would rather not be away from my family for that long.

So why I am I telling you all of this? Two reasons, first I need people that will pray for my family as we travel to these places.   It is my hope that I will get multiple opportunities to create gospel memories for my two daughters that will make a lasting impact on their lives.  The second reason is because this dream is far beyond our financial capacity.  To make this happen I will need some friends to partner with my family to make this dream a reality.

So if my family or I have been a help to you, would you consider helping my family?  If so click here to find out the details of how.

Building Update

Written by Dale

Well it has been a busy few months.  Much busier than usual!  God has provided us with a new home and we have been busy making the changes needed to have services on Sundays!  I apologize for the delay in communicating but working late at the building on top of my other responsibilities has left little time for sharing unfortunately.  The building is coming along quite nicely.  I have been so blessed by all the people that have given of their time to come and serve and help us make this building a home.  We have also been blessed by the people that have without asking or prompting donated materials and supplies to help get this project going.  God has truly been going before us on so many occasions to make this building happen.

It started with the building itself.  First we pick up the property and house behind the building for only $7k at that point not realizing that we would one day by the property on the front of the block.  The owner just decided we were going to get the building and he was willing to wait for us to buy it.  Then he helped us out with the purchasing of the building by being as flexible as we needed him to be.  We needed to raise 25k for the down payment and in less than two months we were able to gather all the money we needed.  It was pretty clear this is where God wanted us to be.

From there we have been working trying to get the building to the point of having services.  Again so many guys from the church have stepped up in such big ways to give up their afternoons and their Saturdays for the past several weeks to get the job done.  I have been humbled by their service and devotion to the gospel in this way.  In a short period of time the building has transformed so much!  Each time I go in I can hardly believe all the changes I see.  Here are some pictures of the progress.

Now we are working on going from a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy to a permanent one.  We have approximately 100 days to get the changes made to the building.  This involves several more structural modifications to the building that are quite costly.  If you or your church may be interested in helping with one of these items you can see a list here of what remains(look at Item #1).  I believe even in these needs God is going before us and making a way for all of these things to get accomplished.

Please keep praying for us as we work to be missionaries in the downtown area.  If you are interested in being a downtown missionary for events that will be happening in the downtown area please email me and I will get you an application to fill out so we can see which events you would be best suited for given your unique gifts.  This also includes volunteers at the café if you are interested in serving in that outreach to the community.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement!

The Heart of a Sojourner

Written by Dale

Genesis 15:13Then the LORD said to Abram, "Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.

This verse has special significance to me given my experience thus far at Church on The Way.  In many ways this describes the last few years of our existence.  Many might look from the outside and think that we are not sojourners.  I have already been approached by a pastor from a downtown church looking for a job wanting me to hire him because of the wealth he perceives we have.  People see the café or our office suite and for some even our new building downtown and assume we have arrived in the promise land.  What they don’t realize is that we are really just sojourners in our city in lands that are not ours.

I have been wondering for the last few months why He has allowed us to be in this position.  Why do we have so many things for the church yet not really own any of it.  We have had to learn to take care of other people’s land as if it was our own.  In many ways we are slaves to our various masters.  While I know ultimately God owns it all and these people are simply stewards of it for God, I still feel it is our responsibility to serve them to the best of our ability so that He gets the most glory.  We are called to do things that we would normally never do if we owned these properties.

I first thought this was to teach us to be humble and to trust daily in the Lord.  When you serve at other people’s pleasure at any moment we may no longer be in their pleasure.  Any moment I can get a phone call and one of the resources may be taken from us without any recourse on our part.  Because of this, we have to wait and trust God to provide not only our daily bread but also our daily ministries.  I have learned that this is not all God wanted to teach us.  God wanted us to have the heart of sojourners.

Sojourners know that this world is temporary.  Sojourners do not place too much emphasis on buildings and possessions.  Sojourners can pick up and move with God without being handicapped at the thought of what is left behind.  Sojourners live their lives trusting God completely for every element of their life.  God loves the Sojourners.  His chosen people were sojourners.  He sent His son to sojourn among man.  His son was willing to give up everything this world had to offer to follow and glorify his father.  Likewise those that follow Jesus are called to be sojourners.  Christians are called aliens living in a world that is not their own.

Lord please help us to see that it is you that owns everything.  Help us to see that we are just stewards of what you have given us.  Help us to see that what you have allowed us to possess does not define us.  Help us to see that our buildings don’t define who we are.  Help us to see that our current ministries do not define who we are.   Help us to see that it is only you that defines who we are.

God is Crazy Part 3

Written by Dale

When God first gave me the vision to go downtown as a missionary I had no idea what to expect.  I knew what downtown represented in my mind.  Spiritually speaking downtown was a desert I might find myself wandering through for forty years like the nation of Israel.  This however has not been the case.  God has been showing me that it is more like the Promised Land.  Like the Promise land in the Bible it is occupied by giants.  These giants are economic, criminal and educational in nature.  Economically speaking the downtown area has an unemployment rate of 30% compared to the county average of 13%.  That is twice the unemployment in one neighborhood of the county.  In addition 40% of the people that live in the downtown area are below poverty.  This neighborhood represents half of all the people in Lake City that are below poverty.  Criminally speaking 22% of all the calls made to the police department come from this one neighborhood.  These rates are forecasted to keep increasing unless something changes downtown.  Educationally speaking, 10% of the people in the downtown area have less than a ninth grade education level.  These giants caused me to have unbelief just like the Israelites.  God has been growing my faith through this process and helping me overcome unbelief.

Let me share one way God has helped me in this area of unbelief.  I knew when we moved downtown we needed to avoid making one of two mistakes often made.  The first is to completely ignore the city’s agenda and simply pursue our own agenda.  The second is to try to go in a direction opposite of the city’s agenda.  Hoping to avoid both of those directions we have sought from the beginning to support the city and its agenda wherever and whenever possible.  This included in helping with all the major events that happen in the downtown area.  This has lead to an amazing opportunity.  The church has been approached by the City of Lake City and the Chamber of Commerce to partner with them on all the major events that happen downtown.  It will be our role to staff the events with the human resources to make the events a success.   This is definitely God at work!  God has allowed us to be able to serve our community in a whole new way!  We will be sending our more info on this as well as a way you can all get involved in the coming year.

Finally I would just like to praise God for allowing us to raise $23,000 dollars toward our down payment.  We need to get another $2,000 to have the money needed to close on our building downtown.  God has been amazing in his provision and I am so thankful that I get to sit in a position every week and see him work.

God is Crazy Part 2

Written by Dale

So a lot has happened since my last update.  God has been busy even when we have not.  We have been blessed by First Baptist Church to allow us to use their fellowship hall and kids space to meet in for a couple of months.  This has allowed the church a larger place to continue to grow, and grow we have!  God is continuing to grow His church.  Having more room for kids has caused us to double our average weekly kids attendance.  We have also seen many first time guests in our temporary location which I have to be honest surprised me!  I know it shouldn't but it did.

After our first week or two something very devastating happened.  I got comfortable.  The facilities were so much nicer and bigger than we had ever had.  The lower overhead cost was allowing us to save money for the first time in a long time.  The setup was minimal.  I knew the work that lay ahead with the building that God was sending us to and this did not help.  All these things equal a comfortable pastor.  There is nothing worse than a comfortable pastor for a church.  After pushing hard for the last few years it was easier than I would like to admit to fall into the trap.

God however while never let His people get to comfortable.  God begin to remind me that I needed to get back on mission.  He allowed me to again get uncomfortable.  The task however seemed impossible He was calling us to, which is one way to know that it is God leading rather than man leading.  We like to do what is possible He likes to do what is impossible.   When it is impossible only He can get the credit.  So He put a building in our path and an owner that was willing to work with us to make it happen.  The impossible part seemed to be the down payment.  We needed to come up with $25,000 to buy the two buildings downtown.  That was going to be tough considering that’s about a quarter of our yearly budget.  But the really tough part is I felt that God restricted me from soliciting help raising the funds.  I made two separate emails lists to everyone I have ever known and yet God said I couldn’t send out an e-mail.  I could only tell my people and if someone asked me how they could help I could tell them.

Needless to say because of this I put off signing the contract for the building as long as possible for fear that we would not get the money for the down payment.  So I waited to see how much money we could raise.  That is about the same time I started getting comfortable which made for a bad combination.  God impressed on me that I needed to sign those papers in faith not knowing how He would provide.  After talking with our stewardship team they agreed and I finally took that step of faith.  I can honestly say that I had no idea how God was going provide.  Our people had been giving sacrificially but we still didn’t have enough.  Finally we reached ten thousand and I thought man we are going to make it!  Then I got into the building and realized the down payment would just get us the building.  We needed money for deposits and build out expenses.   Like Noah even if we built the boat there was still a door to large for us to shut on our own.

Once I signed the papers I felt a release from God about talking about the building costs.  God wanted me to sign those papers trusting in Him alone.  That is the only reason reason you are getting this update.  But God has brought us to an amazing place and now I need your help.  God has shown me that I often think to small and that instead of praying for the down payment I should have been praying for the total amount.  We have an opportunity to put a big dent in that amount over the next couple of weeks.  Here is where it gets crazy.

God has blessed us with a good month financially and we are going to be able to give all the offerings from this fifth Sunday to put toward the building down payment and move-in costs.  That alone is crazy as we have never before been able to skip a Sunday and not feel the financial pain.  But it gets crazier.  Starting this Sunday every dollar that is donated will be matched up to $10,000!!!!

So if we can raise the remaining $11,000 we need it will turn into $21,000!   So here is where I need your help.  If Church on The Way has ever been a blessing to you then I ask that you consider helping us raise this match amount so we can double it!  I am praying that God will do something even crazier than I can even dream or imagine.  This is bigger than Church on The Way this is about God being on mission to restore a community back to himself.  If you feel led to be a part of this restoration with us please come this Sunday and bring your gift personally to help us reach our goal.  If you can’t make it please click here to donate or send a check – COTW, P.O. Box 1649, Lake City, Fl 32056.  Please put “downtown” in the memo line of the check or in the comment box on paypal.

I am also praying that God would have other people out there that would be willing to match funds after the $10,000 if that is something God puts on your heart e-mail me and let me know!  We will need a total of $225,000 plus build out costs to pay off the building and be debt free and that is what I am praying for!  Will you join me in that prayer?

Dale

God is Crazy.....

Written by Dale

The theme of my life lately has been “God is crazy!”.  It has been a while since my last update this time however that has been God’s fault.  You see we are in the process of raising money to be able to buy a building that will house the church.  If I would have just started sending out emails to everyone I know then in some small way I would try to take the credit for helping to raise the funds.  In fact I compiled two email lists one of everyone I know and another of everyone I kind of know.  I wanted to cover all bases when communicating our financial need.  Both times God let me waste hours putting the list together and then said, “yeh you can’t use it”.  I asked why and he said because then it would be about you instead of me.  He wants to provide for His church so that only He gets the glory when the financing is provided.

So this update is about the amazing things God has been doing lately at Church on The Way:

I really don’t know where to begin God has been busy.  Let me start with a guy named Brian.  God knew when He told me to be the pastor of COTW that I was lacking in many areas administratively.  I am not the person you want to organize details.  I tend to forget details even exist because I am so focused on the big picture.  We also have to remember that God’s economy is not like our economy it’s a backward economy, last shall be first kind of thing.   So while I am excited to tell you all about what Brian has been doing for COTW over the last couple of weeks it has only been because Brian lost his job that most of this has been possible.  Isn’t that crazy?  For Brian to be the blessing that he has been lately he had to lose his job?  Brian has been organizing different aspects of the church that have needed to be organized for years.  Specifically with the move of the church approaching God knew we needed a little more help than usual so He sent Brian to handle it.  Brian has asked me many times, “ok what’s the plan” and I just look at him and say, “you are” with a smile.  Brian has stepped up and organized everything.  Today we should be moving the last of the stuff to storage and spending the weekend cleaning the building for the final time.  My personal prayer is that God will let me have Brian full-time soon by sending the money to cover him working for the church.  Would you join me in that prayer?

Offices….man God has been really crazy here.  In the life of Oswald Chambers in his biography Abandoned to God, he refers to himself and his wife as God’s spoiled little brats.  This is how I have been feeling lately.  I have the craziest office you have ever seen and it was given to us.  The church has been able to use a group of offices for counseling and other meetings.  These offices are far nicer than anything I would have imagined the church ever having.  While these offices are temporary the owner has offered to build us new offices and donate the use of them to the church.  God has given us so many offices now I can’t wait to see how he fills them up.

This to me is one of the craziest things to happen over the last two months.  We needed a place to have church while we continued to raise money so I asked First Baptist Church of Lake City if we could use their fellowship hall for a couple of months.  The deacons voted unanimously to let us use the space.  This will save the church around $1,500 a month we can put toward our new building.  When we decided to leave our current building we still didn’t know where we would be going exactly but God did.  We will have an excellent facility to meet in and a couple of kid’s rooms as well.   You cannot ask for a better transitional space it even has a beautiful view of the lake downtown!

There are some many other little things I am thankful for.  God keeps providing the right people and the resources we need just when we need them most.  There are so many other stories I could share feel free to call me if you want to hear more I get fresh ones daily.

Make sure you go here and like R59Africa this is a project we are going to be working with to spread the gospel in Africa.  If any of you happen to have any skymiles you could donate to help fly Andy and Ginny over this summer for a scouting trip to find a home please let me know.
